Spiritual Development: Helping Every Light Shine

At St Mary & All Saints, spiritual development is about nurturing the inner life of every child and adult in our school family. Rather than being something "slippery" or abstract, we view spirituality as the essential way we learn to flourish. It is the gentle spark that fuels our curiosity, builds our resilience, and allows us to see the unique light in ourselves, in others, and in the world around us.

Our Shared Definition of Spirituality

We define spiritual development as the process of growing our self-awareness, our relationships with others, our connection to the wider world, and—for those with faith—our relationship with God. It is an inclusive journey for those of all faiths and none, focusing on cultivating a deep sense of awe, wonder, and moral purpose.

Our Framework: Windows, Mirrors, and Doors

To give our community a shared vocabulary for spiritual growth, we use the Windows, Mirrors, and Doors approach across our entire curriculum:

  • Windows (Looking Outward): We provide opportunities for children to look out at the world with curiosity. Through art, science, stories, and nature, we encourage them to experience a sense of awe, wonder, and delight at the beauty and mystery of creation.

  • Mirrors (Looking Inward): We give children the quiet space to look inside themselves. Through reflection and prayer, they consider their own feelings, actions, and identity, learning to treat themselves and others with kindness and respect.

  • Doors (Looking Forward): Spirituality moves us to action. We encourage our pupils to open doors and step through them—using what they have learnt about themselves and the world to develop resilience and bravely make a difference as courageous advocates for change.
